J sure had a thrilling thirteenth birthday as we celebrated in style at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. We were blessed with beautiful sunny weather and started the day in a relaxed tone by riding the smooth sailing aeroplanes followed by the steady Derby Darby Carousel.
Paul and I then decided to give the kids their first real test in terms of rollercoaster riding and so took both J & E on the Grand National. First opened in 1935, the Grand National has stood the test of time and is the only remaining twin-tracked wooden rollercoaster here in the UK. Whilst J seemed to love every up and down of this hair-raising ride, E wasn’t a happy bunny and declared from there on in – she was most certainly NOT a fan of rollercoasters and no longer wished to ride anything of the sort.
Though J had assured me prior to our visit that he was up for riding ‘The Big One’, he changed his mind not long after having seen the reality of the ride up close. Fair play to J, the Big One is the UK’s tallest coaster standing at 235ft reaching speeds of 85mph, it’s certainly not for the faint hearted. I however wasn’t willing to miss out on riding this classic coaster and so ‘took to the sky’ earlier today to do just that.
It’s been a great day all in all, though we’re now completely and utterly exhausted having ridden almost everything in the park, we’ve had such fun and made some wonderful memories.

Happy birthday to J! It sounds like you all had a really good day. I’ve only been to Blackpool once – probably 1993! I did go on Grand National and enjoyed it, but I know there’s no way I’d get on The Big One!
I also rode Icon which was fairly good too
So glad you have had your fun day at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. It’s been many years since we went there but our children where too young to ride the big rides when we did. I have been on The Big One in the past and I will never do it again, lol
Last time I rode it was with my Dad … so it had to be done in memory.
Oh wow! What a great birthday J had. It sounds like such a fun day even if everyone was not a fan of the rollercoasters! I remember being up for riding “The Big One” years and years ago until I saw it up close and chickened out. It really is big. x
He’s been spoilt rotten and had a great time.
Now that is a place I have not been nigh on 50 years
Wow that’s a long time
Eek that looks a bit scary X #mysundaysnapshot
