#MySundaySnapshot – The Aurora 19/52 (2024)

Welcome to this week’s #MySundaySnapshot post, which is part of a snap-sharing-blog-linky series that you are very welcome to join. Click here for further information and guidelines upon this linky should you wish to take part.

It has been a lifelong dream of mine to see the Northern Lights. I remember as a child I spent great time and care writing into Jim’ll Fix It in the hope that he’d somehow arrange the event. Thank goodness he didn’t fix anything for me as Lord only knows what I’d have been shown!

Though it’s rather unlikely that the Northern Lights would ever dance in the skies above where I’m located, I’ve continued to keep an app on my phone to alert me of such events in the hope that one day, I might stand a chance at achieving my lifelong dream of viewing the Aurora Borealis. Following a vast solar flare, my phone began beeping somewhat incessantly sharing the information that the chances of viewing the Northern Lights were ‘HIGH’. Paul and I poured ourselves a couple of drinks and plonked ourselves in the hot tub, turning the lights off in the hope that on the off-chance we might just see something in the sky.

As it happened the majority of Europe and some parts of Northern America were blessed with what I can only describe as the most stunning show from the sky that I have ever witnessed. I can officially say that I have seen the Northern Lights and I didn’t have to travel to Iceland, Norway or any of the likely places to view such an event – I saw this show from my back garden and later my daughter’s bedroom window and it’s something that I’ll never forget.

I have travelled to Finland and Norway and Tasmania 3 times in the hope of seeing Auroras but no lick (just some wisps of green – and a massive grey one that lit up the valley but was on a dog sled so couldn’t take photos to get the colours) and I eagarly scoured the skies but alas Sydney was covered in thick cloud for the 2 days and nights. I even walked home at 1 am on the off chance to get a small glimpse. No. Meanwhilemy feeds are full of everyone I know around the world seeing beautiful displays. It was a once in a century activity, last time that level of activity in 24 hours was 1932, Some of Africa and South America got unprecedented lights….I am feeling very sorry for myself – but super happy for everyone else. I hope they know how lucky they are.

What a fantastic photo! I hadn’t realised the Northern Lights would be visible everywhere! I was very jealous when I woke up on Saturday morning and realised I’d missed them. We went to look for them on Saturday night, but there was no sign of them, sadly.

I would like to see the Northern Lights. Your image is absolutely stunning. And to have captured It on film or rather digital file 🙂
