Having worked and read with numerous sets of Tarot and Oracle cards, I’ve always been tempted to dive into the deep end and to create my very own divination deck. Though I have the inspiration, the ideas, and perhaps the artistic abilities, I simply don’t have the time nor the inclination to create my own deck as of yet. However, should I ever find the time to put my ideas into action, I’ll be sure to be using Steven Bright’s ‘The Oracle Creator‘ as a guide to designing, developing, and eventually publishing my very own deck.
Written by Steven Bright, The Oracle Creator, first published in 2021 by Liminal 11, is a hardback extensive guide on how to design, develop and produce your very own Tarot/ Oracle deck.
Steven Bright
Steven Bright is an author, artist, and the creator of numerous divination decks (including the Spirit Within Tarot and the Rainbow Kipper Divination Deck ). Born in London in 1972, Steven is the co-founder of the Esotoracle Magazine and alongside his own books ‘Tarot: Your Personal Guide’ (Wellfoot Books, 2018) and ‘The Oracle Creator’ (Liminal 11 publishing 2021) he has also written for various well-known periodicals.
Delving Into Divination
Oracles have been in existence for as long as humans have been on the planet as we are forever curious as to what the future may hold. The practice of divination has evolved over time from the likes of using reflections of clouds in the water to reading from cards – divination is now as popular as ever!
The Oracle Creator: The Modern Guide to Creating a Tarot or Oracle deck examines the benefits of building your very own oracle or Tarot deck whilst offering practical tips for turning your dream of creating a deck into a reality. Bright considers each and every aspect of creating a divination deck from the initials ideas, right through to approaching publishers and marketing your masterpiece. Complete with interviews from a variety of divination deck creators and publishers, The Orale Creator has you covered through each and every step of the process.
Though I struggle to find the time for reading at present, I found The Oracle Creator quick and easy to access as you can dip in and out of particular sections, homing into exactly what it is that you need to read and research. The contents have been split into sections including:
- Introduction
- Considering an Oracle
- Planning Your Oracle
- Designing Your Oracle
- Publishing Your Oracle
- Conclusion
Ideas & Inspiration
Bright has collected and published a wealth of information for those wishing to set about designing and producing their very own divination decks, he has even gone as far as to offer templates and space in his publication for readers to jot down their ideas thus making this not just a guide but a workbook.
This comprehensive guide touches upon numerous divination techniques such as Tarot cards, Lenormand cards, Oracle cards, Runestones, and much more. Bright outlines the key characters, colours, symbology, imagery, methodology, and meaning behind each and every aspect of divination.Â
Having worked with the entirety of Liminal 11’s divination decks, I was pleased to see that many of their decks and creators have been included and involved within this guide.
