Our children have the most amazing imaginations and take great pleasure in sitting and spending time dreaming up and writing stories. J, our eldest has even made a series of comics which he takes great pride in writing and illustrating.
We were recently sent a pack of Rory’s Story Cubes to rate, review and to share on this here blog as part of the Bloggers Board Game Club. I’d never come across Story Cubes prior to receiving these, neither for that matter had my children. Twenty-four hours and many stories later my children are head over heels with Rory’s Story Cubes.
Story Cubes
Perfect for stirring your children’s creative juice, Rory’s Story Cubes are a series of nine dice each die/ cube featuring six images which children may use to inspire story telling. Rory’s Story Cubes are the ideal story generator, simply roll the nine cubes, look at the images an allow your imagination to run wild!
Suitable for any number of players, Rory’s Story Cubes are targeted towards children aged six years and over. However, our four-year old daughter seemed to rather enjoy using the cubes to create a range of wonderful stories and therefore I would suggest that children and adults of almost any age could put these wonderful cubes to use.
Perfectly sized for taking out and about, Rory’s Story Cubes are the ideal ‘handbag’ toy to inspire creative story telling anywhere and everywhere.
Let’s Tell A Story…
Our son J wasted no time whatsoever in putting these cubes to use and within seconds of opening the box he’d already put together a rather humorous tale which should you wish to listen to or watch then I’ve included the video below.
There are a variety of ways in which to ‘play’ with Rory’s Story Cubes. A simple yet effective method is simply to roll all nine dice then select a cube at a time to inspire an element of your story linking all nine sections together to tell a tale.
Alternatively players may wish to roll three cubes to create a character, then roll all nine cubes to tell a tale including your character. Another option may be to split the cubes into three groups and section the story into a start, middle and ending following the cubes as guidance for ideas. There are further ideas for gameplay featured upon the StoryCubes website – whichever way you chose to play is entirely up to you!
Images featured upon the cubes can be interpreted however the player perceives, there are no limits to the length of the stories created and at no point are there any wrong answers!
Both J & E adored these Story Cubes and spent hours telling each other tales around the table. It was a joy to listen to the children working creatively whilst actually getting along together. This evening our daughter requested that the cubes should be used to inspire a bedtime story, it was a refreshing change from reading books and we will be sure to continue making use of these wonderful cubes both in and out of the house with family and friends.
