Marvelling at the Mystical Medleys Tarot

Being an avid Tarot reader, cinema buff, and animation fan, I could barely contain myself when I was told that Liminal 11 were planning on sending me a copy of Gary Hall’s latest release – The Mystical Medleys Tarot. Inspired by the iconic imagery from the 1930’s cartoons, the Mystical Medleys Tarot features vivid, vintage cartoon-style cards that are a fresh take upon the traditional Tarot combining bold, bright imagery with lighthearted, madcap energy.

Gary Hall

Gary Hall studied animation at University and has since worked as an animator with the likes of Disney. He is particularly fond of the vintage rubber hose-style cartoons from the 1920s and 30s and spent time drawing his own occult and gothic cartoon characters in a similar style.

Gary Hall is a pop culture occultist and self-confessed ‘geeky nerd’ who has had a lifelong obsession with animation, video games, and heavy metal music. Alongside his love for animation and gaming, Gary has always been fascinated by Magick, the occult, and the imagery of the Tarot. Having collected and used traditional Tarot decks, Gary had his heart set on creating his own.

After fifteen lengthy years, Gary finally managed to escape the clutches of video games and set about combining his love for animation with his fascination for the Tarot, thus the Mystical Medleys Tarot was born.

Beautifully Boxed

The Mystical Medleys Tarot arrives in a sturdy, stylish, collectible, cardboard, full-colour, slipcase box featuring a magnetic clasp base (which includes a devilish surprise upon opening).

Another Great Little Guidebook

Like most Liminal 11 publications, The Mystical Medleys Tarot comes with a delightful dinky, sixty-page, colour-printed, hardback guidebook that includes a foreword, an introduction, a short guide to the major arcana, a single page upon each of the major arcana cards (including a small colour print of the card itself), a short guide to the minor arcana, a paragraph upon each of the minor arcana cards, a quick guide on how to read the Tarot, and four sample spreads.

I love how the guidebook is filled with playful takes upon each of the card meanings as they aid readers to relate to the more traditional meanings for each of the cards.

The Cards

The Mystical Medleys Tarot includes eighty Tarot cards (twenty-two major arcana cards, fifty-six minor arcana cards, and two bonus cards exclusive to this deck).

Featuring simple red and white reversible backs, and simple white borders with clear black numbering and titling, each card within the Mystical Medleys Tarot measures 120 x 70mm and is printed on full-colour, matt finish paper stock ideal for making the bright, bold colours pop.

The Major Arcana

Traditionally numbered and titled, the major arcana combines classic imagery from the traditional Rider Waite Smith Tarot alongside more modern, cartoon-style characters (some of which are easily relatable and recognisable) resulting in a rich, vibrant, fun, and easy to read Tarot deck suitable for all levels of readers.

The Minor Arcana

Much like the major arcana, the minor arcana continues to include vintage, vivid, cartoon-style artwork, whilst continuing to respect and represent the essential elements from the traditional RWS Tarot.

A Walkthrough Guide

I have created a short video walkthrough offering a more detailed, closer look at the deck.

Reading & Working With The Mystical Medleys Tarot

I’ve spent the past fortnight reading and working with The Mystical Medleys Tarot and what fun it has been! This is an incredibly light-hearted, joyful deck for both the client and the reader.

The cartoon imagery is similar to the likes of Mickey Mouse, Beauty & The Beast, Ren & Stimpy, Donald Duck, Snow White, Alice In Wonderland, Fantasia, The Little Mermaid, and many other classic cartoons (as it is intended to be) thus the cards are incredibly easy to read and interpret.

Not only have I enjoyed reading with this deck but my children have also enjoyed watching as I’ve carried out readings, often commenting on who they think particular characters and cards are based upon.

Purchasing & Pricing Information

Released on 9th October 2021, The Mystical Medleys Tarot is available to purchase online directly from Liminal 11 for £23.99.

To Summarise

The Mystical Medleys Tarot is a bright, cheery, and happy deck that is ideal for all ages and all levels of Tarot and divination readers. I love how Liminal 11 offer indie-style decks for a reasonable price, and I’m particularly taken by this devilishly delightful and marvelously modern take on the traditional Tarot.

The Mystical Medleys Tarot is yet another Liminal 11 success that I’m certain will be the next cult classic to take 2021 by storm.
