I’ve been spoilt rotten of late as Deckstiny, a Thailand-based Tarot and divination deck publisher, very kindly sent me seven of their amazing Tarot decks to work with, to read with, and review including the cute and very colourful Emojiny Tarot.
Designed and created by Mate Horonumber with illustrations and graphics by Oomsin Phumphat, the Emojiny Tarot is a bright, bold, and beautifully designed deck ideal for readers of all ages. However, as the Emojiny Tarot comes without a guidebook and the emoji-based images only suggest towards the character/ figure/ card intended, I would suggest that the Emojiny Tarot is suited to more experienced Tarot readers with prior knowledge and understanding of the meanings and messages behind each card.
Packaging & Presentation
First printed and published in 2020, the first edition of the Emojiny Tarot comes in a smooth, cardboard, tuck-box. Both the cards and the tuck box arrive wrapped in cellophane for extra protection.
The Cards
Printed on matt-coating 310 GSM Japanese quality card stock, the Emojiny Tarot is a standard Tarot-sized deck that shuffles with ease.
The Emojiny Tarot is a borderless, plain-white-edged deck featuring beautiful, black, reversible card backs with bright, cosmic-rainbow artwork centered around a red and white pinwheel. Each Tarot card within this deck has a differing background colour and features a range of emoji icons/ images with the titling and numbering clearly written on a white banner at the base of each card.
Additional/ Bonus Cards
Deckstiny has included additional bonus cards within the Emojiny Tarot including an introduction card featuring cartoon imagery of the author and artist of this deck, a limited edition signed certification card, a welcome card, and two advertisement cards for both the Brush Tarot and the Shuffle Tarot which are alternative Deckstiny Tarot decks.
Mario Style Magic
Five further Mario-themed bonus cards (The Star, The Page of Pentacles, The Knight of Pentacles, The Queen of Pentacles and The King of Pentacles) are also included. I guess that these cards may be swapped with the alternatives within the deck to provide even more fun for the reader and the querent.
Happy Squirrels
Almost every Deckstiny Tarot deck that I have worked with thus far includes a ‘Happy Squirrel’ card including the Emojiny Tarot which includes a cute pair of squirrel lovers. Whilst I’m still a little unsure as to the meaning of this card (as there is no guidebook) I have added it to my deck and am associating this card with the concept of passion.
Shuffling Through The Emojiny Tarot
Both the major arcana and minor arcana cards featured within the Emojiny Tarot each have differing bright background colours and most feature at least two or more emoji-style icons/images to portray the particular card. The Fool for example (which Deckstiny has provided an alternative card for so that it may be swapped with the original enabling readers to further customise and personalise their decks) features a man with a hat, a rose, a cliff edge and a dog – the four key elements which are featured in the traditional Rider Waite Smith Tarot.
Flicking Through The Emojiny Tarot
As always with Tarot and divination deck reviews, I have put together a detailed walkthrough of when I first opened, unboxed, and unwrapped the Emojiny Tarot.
Reading and Working With The Emojiny Tarot
I have been working with the Emojiny Tarot for almost a week now and I love how bright, bold, clear, colourful, and easy it is to work with and to read with. This is such a modern, groovy, and vibrant version of the traditional RWS, it’s such great fun to work with!
In comparison to The Kawaii Tarot, another emoji-based Tarot deck that I’ve previously worked with, the Emojiny Tarot is far superior as the size of the cards are much bigger, the cardstock is much higher quality, and the additional bonus cards and customisation options available within this deck make the Emojiny Tarot the ultimate in emoji -style- Tarot decks.
Reading with the Emojiny Tarot will never fail to raise a smile as the cutesy emoji-art-style is adorable and of course, so familiar to us all in this modern world.
Purchasing & Pricing Information
Retailing at £37.87, the Emojiny Tarot is available to purchase online directly via Deckstiny’s Etsy Shop with an additional shipping and postage fee of £29.30 for customers within the UK.
To Summarise
The Emojiny Tarot is a compelling, contemporary, clever twist on the traditional RWS Tarot system which makes for fun readings. Whilst I wouldn’t suggest using this deck to carry out a serious, heart-to-heart, emotional reading, I would most certainly recommend it for those of you who wish to carry out light-hearted, fun and friendly forecasts.
