Once you become a parent, New Year’s Eve parties become totally different. It doesn’t help that the coronavirus decided to stick around for another year. New Year Eve parties are something that can be fun, whether you’re celebrating with friends and family or even the little ones in your household. New Year’s Eve can be fantastic for children, it gives them the chance to eat tasty appetizers, have fun around, see fireworks, and maybe even wave around sparklers.
While many don’t think that New Year’s Eve celebrations can be a family affair, there’s no doubt about it that it can become one. Staying at home and celebrating with your spouse and kids gives you the opportunity to not have to worry about getting home, staying cold, plus once your kids go to bed, you can still celebrate with the spouse. These are some fun New Year’s Eve party ideas for celebrating with your kids.

6 Ideas for Creating a Family Friendly New Year's Eve Party

Set the mood

Just like with any party, you’ll want to decorate. Look into getting some party supplies and spruce up the house. If you still have Christmas decorations or lights up, then go ahead and light them up too so the indoors will look extra merry and bright.

Create some mocktails

Creating some fun mocktails for you and your little ones will be a great hit! It gives you the chance to still sip on something tasty, and it can be a hit with the kids as well. You can take it an extra step further by purchasing some plastic champagne flutes for the kids too. Bring in a festive drink for the new year with your kid’s favourite juice or smoothies and maybe even add some frozen gummies to it to keep it cold. This allows the whole family to toast together.

Create a tradition

Most likely as a parent you’ll be celebrating more New Year’s Eve parties with your children, so why not create some memorable traditions? One idea would be the Happiness Jar, but realistically, you can create whatever tradition you’d like for your family to practice. This tradition could carry on with them whenever they have children.

Family-friendly games

What’s a party without any games? Children love to get silly, and playing games is a great way to bring out the sillies! There are plenty of games families can play together when it be video games such as Mario Party but even classic board games would be fantastic too. You can even take it a bit easy and just play some bingo with them instead.

Whip up a fun family menu

Since you’ll be bringing in the New Year with your family, why not have a fun meal? These can be healthy such as fruit shish kebabs but they can truly be whatever you’d like.

Get out the sparklers

Sparklers are one of those fireworks that are quite safe for almost all ages. They tend to be easy to find and are considered one of the NYE staples. Instead of going into the new year with a bang, why not with a spark?

I haven’t been to a NYE party for many years but we really enjoy our family traditions. We start off with a buffet of food and couple of drinks. Then watch a movie or play a game depending on everyone’s choices, then it’s time for cheese and wine before watching the Hootenanny for the countdown. We go outside and wish the neighbours Happy New Year and then collapse in bed. Well, I do, last year the older kids stayed up playing card games! I might try some mocktails this year.

We like to watch the London celebrations (Big Ben chiming twelve) – Paul usually goes out of the back door and comes into front carrying bread, booze, and a lump of coal (for luck) and we then collapse in bed.
