As some of you may be aware, I am currently recovering from surgery which took place earlier this week. I won’t lie, I was ever so slightly nervous about the procedure but as always, I plastered on a smile and soldiered on.
I’m a bit of an early bird when it comes to appointments, I am almost never late for anything and always ensure that I leave with plenty of time to spare. ‘Time to spare’ would usually be a good thing. However, on this occasion it felt as if every second dragged on for at least a minute and at one point I found myself checking that my watch hadn’t physically stopped!
Rather than looking too eager by rocking up far earlier than expected, I decided to pull over and to give myself a moment, to get some fresh air and try to iron out my nerves.
Other than the sound of the birds singing, the odd bleat of a sheep or the moo of a cow, I was surrounded by silence. This moment gave me the chance to silence my mind and to silence my nerves – there’s nothing quite like nature to nurture the soul.
“Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence”
Simon & Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence
