It’s been a long time since our kids had Christmas trees in their rooms. We once had two miniature fibre optic Christmas trees that the kids had in each of their rooms but they became fire risks and thus are long gone. Having watched both Home Alone 1 and 2 within the space of twenty-four hours, my son had got himself very much into the festive spirit and requested that we take him and his sister to the local hardware store so that they could peruse this year’s Christmas display.
Despite Storm Darragh causing chaos, we decided to hop into the car and follow the kids’ request. One hour later we were stringing baubles together and watching on as our son decorated his very own tree for his bedroom. Never mind the lights, the baubles, the tinsel, or the stunning star which delighted our son, it was one simple thing – the robin.
I know exactly why J wanted to have a robin on his tree and I had to hold back the tears as he proudly presented his finished work to Paul and I. Rocky Robin is such a sweet and simple decoration yet it holds such large amounts of meaning as it offers a respectful and loving nod to somebody who was once a large part of J’s life.
