I thought August was an expensive month, what with our trip to Florida, but boy was I wrong as September sure topped it when it comes to ‘breaking the bank’. I can’t say I’ve particularly enjoyed the past few weeks as it seems that we’ve been struck with what feels like an endless bout of bad luck.
The month began with a return to routine (aka school began) and though we had organised the uniform, the books, the bags, and all those sorts of things, it seems our wheels had other ideas. We found ourselves a car down after my Mini threw on the Blackpool Illuminations across the dashboard and was quite simply undrivable and thus had to be loaded and taken away on a truck for extremely costly repairs. Meanwhile, our backup car decided that it too warranted repairs and at one point I was wondering whether I’d actually get to work never mind ferry the kids back and forth to their various activities.
We were then slapped with a parking fine from August which was just unfortunate and extremely unfair given that we’d paid for a ticket to park and despite our appeal with Parking Eye we were forced to pay up. The kids then came home with various letters for trips, outings, and such-like, and obviously, they needed paying for too not to mention the bills, and of course the food shopping. To say this month has been tight is an understatement. Thank god we’re approaching payday as otherwise I might have to sell a kidney.
September can DO ONE!

Oh, what a challenging month you’ve had! Hopefully, October will bring smoother sailing and a well-deserved break for your bank account!
Unexpected car costs are weirdly emotionally distressing. I’ve no idea why. My car kept bracking down and I kept having to be towed and each time the ‘repair’ would be $2k and then it would break down and they’d discover something else. I remember onetime almost bursting into tears about it, even tho this time I was conveniently close to home. It was that moment when I realised I was reacting to something else (or the stress was disproportionate). Anyway, here’s to a better October.
Absoloutly, it’s cost us almost £3000 in total to repair with collection and prior attempts at replacing bits and bobs. It turns out it was a vanos issue AKA engine problems that mean BIG JOBS and BIG MONEY (thanks BMW!)
I did cry … many times for many reasons but mostly because I’d usually ring my Dad in times like these and he’s no longer with me. Thankfully I “held it together man” and I’ve had her repaired and am now on a payment plan until may so I’m PRAYING she behaves.
But you’re so right, it’s all the “other stuff” that makes you cry also and I think I’ve just got to my limit.
Here’s hoping October is better, I’m being positive and looking forward to the likes of Halloween and Bonfire Night and the ‘little things’ (such as Strictly, Gogglebox, and Bake Off returning) are getting me through. I might make some baked treats today just to perk things up a bit more.
I know Dad would say “it’s just a car” or something to that effect (he’d probably tell me I shouldn’t have bought a Mini! Lol) but still, I miss the old bugger and it’s times like these I could just do with him giving me his wise? (Or often rather cutting and no doubt quite unhelpful) words. Lol
I’ll be fine!
Oh dear! That sounds like an absolute nightmare. I hope things are much better for you in October.
(That is a great photo though!)
That must have been awesome visiting that place . Sorry to hear your having Mini problems though I doubt it was like my old Classic one which I had for 21 years. Hope you got it fixed
It’s not a classic no but it was my dream car and I love her so … (as you do)
Ugh! All the expensive things always seem to come all at once. You have had some rotten luck. I hope things improve greatly in October. xx
Thanks – I am trying to keep my chin up (all however many of them lol) and to keep trooping on.
Yes, life is getting more and more expensive all over the place, and renting is always synonymous with unpleasant surprises, especially when imponderables are added to the equation. Take heart, we’re going to have to tighten our belts a little and let’s hope that better days will come
They will come 🙂
