You have taken over the organisation of the surprise birthday party for your mother, your husband or your best friend and it is a heavy task weighing on your shoulders. You do not know where to start? Don’t panic, there are many options! You can make the party super cool with creative cupcakes, or maybe even Booths By Lux!

1. Choose the date and time to organize the birthday
If the birthday falls on a weekend, that makes it easier for you because you know people will be more available than during the week. However, choosing a holiday to host the anniversary may not be a good idea, as your main guest might already have something planned, or anticipate the surprise. If the birthday falls in the middle of the week and you decide to wait until the weekend to throw the party, the person might think you forgot about it! A few days before the event is therefore a good solution for a successful surprise. Regarding the time: for a family celebration, choose on an afternoon. Evenings are great too but if people have work the next day, the afternoon ensures people feel fresher.
2. Establish the guest list
First of all, it doesn’t matter who you contact: make it clear to everyone that it is a SURPRISE birthday and that the person concerned is not aware of anything! When you’ve established your list, send out the invitations! Among the most practical means, I advise you to go through Facebook with the creation of a private event, by setting up a discussion group via the WhatsApp application or by sending an email. It really does depend on what type of platform they use, so ensure that they will definitely get the invite!
Low budget: at home
Cheap or even free: a home party isn’t free but it does keep costs down. The advantage of organizing this at home, perhaps in your grandparents’ conservatory, or in your best friend’s backyard is that it’s inexpensive. The only constraint: the noise and potential hassle caused for the neighbors! If you are on good terms with them, please let them know so that you can let them know the timeframe. If you’re planning to invite quite a few people, you could set up a bowling alley in your backyard! Or maybe arrange to hire a jacuzzi!
Average budget: at the bar or restaurant
The big advantage of hiring out a room or a big table at a restaurant is that you can choose a central location and also choose a place that they love. It is fun to go out to eat and you will be sure that you’ll be eating great food and not burnt offerings from the BBQ. However, it can be a little pricier. Look for restaurants that may offer packages for you. You can also have them decorate the room or table suited to your needs. But it is best to budget before making any big decisions!
