How to Keep Your Cat Safe Outdoors

While cats are as cute as can be, there is one major issue, and it’s curiosity. You probably already know what curiosity did to the cat, and it’s best to entirely avoid that from happening. While they yearn for the outdoors, to do things like climb trees, chase birds, roll in dirt, or even just relax in the sun, sometimes, they stray a little too far from home. For the most part, it’s proven that allowing cats to go outside is a good thing because it gives them the chance to explore and do cat-like things.

But how can you ensure that your cat manages to stay completely safe? How can you feel confident that they’ll be fine if they’re outside? Honestly, just like dogs, it’s all about finding the right balance. So, here is what you need to know about keeping your cat safe when they’re outdoors.

How to Keep Your Cat Safe Outdoors

You’re Going to Need to Start Gradually

Just as you need to prepare with your dog, the concept is similar for the cat; it’s all about being gradual. So, you might want to go ahead and begin with short, supervised outings in a controlled environment, such as a secure backyard or enclosed patio. This helps your cat become accustomed to new sights, sounds, and sensations. The last thing you want is for them to run away during this gradual process, so holding onto them might be a good idea, or you could consider a leash.

Leash Training

There needs to be this balance of your cat being safe but you do not need to worry about them. Just like dogs, cats need exercise, too, and some folks will leash train their cats. So, here are collars, leashes, and even harnesses that are made solely for cats, and you’ll need to buy those. Try to get your cat used to wearing this indoors, and slowly start walking them outside once things begin going well.

Choose Safe Times

You might want to opt for quiet and calm times of the day for outdoor adventures, such as early mornings or late afternoons. Also, just keep in mind that it’s best to avoid peak traffic hours and extreme weather conditions.

Consider a More Secure Enclosure

Cats don’t always need to run around and explore; just being in that outdoor element is often more than enough for most cats. Nowadays, there are things like catios, a cat pen, or some other type of enclosure. These enclosed spaces provide the best of both worlds, allowing your cat to enjoy fresh air while staying protected from potential dangers like traffic, predators, or toxins.

In general, your cat is getting what it wants; plus, you can add a cat tree, toys, food, and water, as well as a litter box for them in this enclosure, so they’re getting everything they want. For a lot of owners, they’ll have it connected to their door so the cat can constantly go in and out-, which is something cats will often try to do anyway.
