The Waiting Game
It’s been almost five and half years since I first suspected that our son may be on the spectrum.
Since then we have battled our way through endless appointments, travelled hundreds of miles and have spent what feels like forever waiting for a diagnosis.
It doesn’t seem right that diagnosing a child with any issue should take five years, whilst ASD may be a complex disorder it isn’t something which I myself see as particularly difficult in identifying. It is simply the lack of services that seems to cause the hold up and that is not just local but a national issue.
We have known as J’s parents for a long time now that our son is on the spectrum but actually getting a diagnosis was comparable to drawing blood from a stone.
We were constantly fobbed off by nursery and pre school teachers and it was only when J started Primary School that we were actually taken seriously.
Getting A Diagnosis
Finally after waiting it out for what feels like forever, J has  been officially diagnosed as having ASD. It came as no shock or surprise to us, it was more of a relief to be honest.
So What Next?
So now what ? Well hopefully now that we have the diagnosis we can begin putting things into place to help J in the school setting and to just make things that bit easier when out and about.
To be honest J has come on leaps and bounds this year, he is super intelligent, has suddenly become quite sociable and seems to cope very well in most respects. There seem to be fewer meltdowns and far less anxiety these days, whether this is a temporary or permanent fixture I cannot be sure.
So whilst we may have impatiently waited for five and half years for a diagnosis, in all honesty it has made very little difference to our lives as of yet. We will continue to take each day as it comes and do our very best for our son. Currently we seem to be #winning, long may it continue!

What a shame it has taken so long. If you had been listened to at preschool the educational plan would have been in place at school. Hopefully you won’t have to wait too long now.
I’m glad you’ve got your diagnosis. Sometimes I think we feel like welfare going crazy when people won’t listen to you. Well done for sticking to your guns xx
Thanks, his school are really supportive and sadly it’s due to the lack of local resources that things have taken so very long. We can focus on moving forward now đŸ™‚
Long may it continue indeed … so sorry it took so long to get the diagnosis you need, to get the full support that is available to you. Yes, long may the winning continue. #CommentLuv
Thanks xxx
It really is a shame it takes so long to diagnose a child with ASD. Glad its done now and hopefully now he will be able to get the support he needs. x
Thanks my love
It must be such a relief to finally get a diagnosis, you know your own child better than anyone so having to wait must have been so frustrating for you. I’m happy to hear that he’s doing so well at the moment and you sound positive about talking steps to help him, you are one strong mamma ! #TuesdayTreasures
All good until today when he’s come home sick but now seems totally fine … hmmm
So sorry to hear that it has taken that long for a diagnosis. At least now you know for sure and are #winning. #TuesdayTreasures
