I will openly admit to the fact that I am a night owl, I always have been and guess I always will be. Once I became a parent I was expecting to get myself to bed earlier but somehow it never happened. Once we have managed to get the kids to bed there are a few hours before we consider hitting the hay ourselves.
We seem to get far more done at night-time than we do during the day, it seems the most obvious time to get things done without the hinderence help of our little ones. Paul and I tend to wind down most nights with the company of our laptops, a snack or two and a glass of the good stuff. Paul enjoys working on his online comic and I tend to catch up with blogging bits and bats on my marvellous Mac.
Now that I am working behind the bar during the evening I tend to arrive getting home just after 10pm and after having a quick soak in the bath and catching up with the soaps midnight has arrived. Whilst I have made a promise to try to get to bed earlier it never actually happens because I actually need that time, that ‘me time’ I guess you could call it.
I have fond memories of laying in till dinner time when I was a teenager and whilst I am no longer able nor would I want to do this, there are times when I wish for sleep sessions from the yesteryears. I certainly burn my candle at both ends but couldn’t settle to sleep any earlier than at least 11.30pm, it just wouldn’t feel right.
According to ‘The Independent’ if you want to get ahead, be a night owl. They suggest that “One theory to explain the extra brain power of night owls is that intelligent children are more likely to grow up to be nocturnal because in ancestral times any activities at night would have been novel and would, therefore, have been more likely to attract people with inquisitive minds.” You can read the full article upon the benefits of being a night owl here. I for one am certainly inquisitive and seem to have my best ideas at night-time, it tends to be when my brain is most active for some reason, this is probably why I find it difficult to sleep when I do eventually settle into my pit.
Most parents seem to go to bed far earlier than us and maybe we are doing it all wrong who knows. We get up with our kids and luckily they don’t usually wake until 8am, we therefore get a decent nights sleep despite having late nights. I often wonder if we are alone in our night owl tendencies, surely we aren’t the only parents pushing into the early hours before snuggling into our sacks?

My son wakes between 5am and 6am. You might be less of a night owl in my situation! I’m a night owl but I can’t cope with the lack of sleep it brings
I am lucky then …
I used to be a night owl then the kids started school and now I have to be up at the latest at 7am. lol
I am more productive on an evening…I just wish I could stay up past 11pm.
awww maybe when they are older huh?
I’m a night owl, but I really shouldn’t be because I can’t cope without a good night sleep. I often go to bed at 1 or 2 but have to get up again at 7 for the school run and work!
1 or 2 eeek!
1 or 2!? ouch lol
I’m definitely not a night owl, my brain just won’t function after around 9pm. I’m much worse since having kids too, probably because 7am is a lie-in for me now!
We are all different and apparently pre programmed prior to birth on our sleep patterns
I am most definitely a night owl, I hate mornings, I even tried leaving my curtains partially open this morning so I could embrace the sunshine, didn’t work, although I did wake up earlier but not in a chirpy blackbird type of way!
lol good idea with the curtains, my hubby jokes that I am a vampire and allergic to light lol
I used to be nightowl. At college and university I did my best studying in the wee small hours. Then when I got a 9-5 job that changed and now my husband gets up for work at 5:30 and my son is always awake by 6:30 so there’s never a chance of a lie in! We tend to go up to bed at 9am and read/blog etc for a while. I’d love to be able to stay up later to get more done though.
I have tried early nights but I can’t settle
